Position Title | Volunteer Dental Assistant |
Purpose or General Summary | To support the dental mission by providing hands-on support as a trained dental assistant. The dental assistant is a vital member of the dental health team. |
Key Responsibilities/ (Essential Job Functions)
| - Chair side assistance.
- Patient Record Management/Administrative; Charting, filing personnel records, scheduling appointments and confirmation, telephone techniques, collecting and recording patient health histories. - Preparing and maintaining dental instruments, supplies and equipment centralized. - Clean and sterilize Dental Instruments Centralized Sterilizing Room(s) (CSR) - X-ray - Arrive on time to training each day. - Sign in and out daily with the appropriate log at the Dental Clinic. No sign-in, no credit. Timesheet must be signed by supervisor. - Maintain current American Red Cross CPR and First Aid qualifications - Patient Management during dental procedures - Instrument transfer - Dental Isolation techniques - Dental Charting - Prevention and management of medical emergencies - Inventory control and management |

Qualifications
Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs) | § Knowledge of the Red Cross Mission; willing to meet organizational goals, mission and vision § Knowledge of management principles and practices ; Adhere to the American Red Cross Code of Conduct § Knowledge of community resources and needs § Skill in oral and written communication § Ability to communicate with volunteers and various contacts in a professional and courteous manner § Ability to establish organized work assignments and establish priorities § Ability to negotiate with others and resolve conflicts, particularly in sensitive situations § Ability to pay close detail and to ensure accuracy of reports and data § Ability to make sound decisions using available information while maintaining confidentiality § Ability to be able to be a part of a team environment and sustain volunteer commitment |
Training | § Orientation to American Red Cross: On-the-job training; planned, organized and conducted at the worksite |

Time Commitment | § Commitment of 500 hours. Approximately 4 months § Recommendation of 35-40 hours minimum a week |
Development Opportunities/ Continuing Education (section 12-1) | § American Red Cross offers Training Courses in the following areas: Community Services, Casework, Disaster, Health and Safety Services ( First Aid and CPR), Babysitter’s training courses § Instructor certification in most areas listed above |
Education and Experience: High School Diploma, GED or equivalent |
